Falcons at Packers, Thursday night: Penix's Lambeau debut is the whole ballgame
Michael Penix Jr. makes his first start since last November's ACL tear at Lambeau on a short week, and the 0-2 Falcons need him to be the answer — not just a spark.
The Falcons have spent two weeks pretending the quarterback wasn't the problem. Thursday night at Lambeau, they stop pretending. Michael Penix Jr. makes his first start since last November's ACL tear, on a short week, on the road, against a Packers front that already has seven sacks — and the 0-2 Falcons are betting the whole season on him being more than a spark.
Penix is the plan, and the plan is the problem
This isn't a "let's see what the kid's got" audition. It's a rescue mission. Atlanta's offense has been so broken under Cooper Rush and Jack Strand that Bijan Robinson's 173 yards in Week 1 were basically the entire show, and the passing game has been a non-factor for two straight weeks. Penix over his final six games of 2025 threw six touchdowns against zero interceptions — that's the version the Falcons need, not the rusty one. The good news: he's a full go, the knee took no step backward, and Tommy Rees can lean on play action and a heavy dose of Bijan to ease him in. The bad news: Green Bay's front is exactly the kind of pressure group that rattles a quarterback making his first start back.
The line and the corner are the quiet worries
A.J. Terrell's groin is the headline health issue — he was a DNP on the short-week report, and if the No. 1 corner sits, slowing Jordan Love's receivers gets a lot harder. In front of Penix, Jawaan Taylor (knee) and Brian Robinson (ankle) were limited, which is no way to protect the guy everyone's betting the rebuild on. Green Bay's banged up too — Jayden Reed looks like a longshot with a back issue, and they're missing offensive linemen — but that's a break for Atlanta's quiet pass rush, not a free pass.
The kicking game could decide a slopfest
Both teams are tired, both offenses have been mediocre, and this has the feel of a low-scoring attrition game. That puts Nick Folk in the spotlight, and that's a problem: he's missed three of his six field goal attempts this season, including one in the cozy confines of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Green Bay's rookie Trey Smack has been perfect, 5-for-5 with a long of 59. If this comes down to a field goal race, the Falcons are currently losing it before kickoff.
What a win actually looks like
It's not pretty. It's a couple of Love turnovers, a clean game from Penix, and Bijan grinding out the clock. The Falcons have zero takeaways through two games and have committed 15 penalties for 135 yards — fix the mistakes, force Green Bay's overmatched line into false starts, and there's a path. But it requires the offense to finally hold up its end, and we genuinely don't know what Penix looks like in his first game back. That's the whole mystery of Thursday night.
Bird Gang bottom line
This game is about one thing: whether Penix is the answer. Not the health report, not the kicking, not the short week — the quarterback. If he's rusty, the Falcons are 0-3 and the questions get louder. If he's the guy from the end of last year, Atlanta finally has an offense worth watching.
