Falcons at Saints, Monday night: New Orleans is missing its three best defenders, and Bijan is the whole answer

The Saints ruled out Kaden Elliss, Carl Granderson and Anfernee Jennings for Monday night, and the Falcons ride a red-hot Bijan Robinson into the Superdome with the NFC South on the line.

The Saints are banged up, and the Falcons should be the team that makes them pay for it. New Orleans ruled out linebacker Kaden Elliss and edge rushers Carl Granderson and Anfernee Jennings for Monday night's game at the Superdome, gutting the middle of a defense that was already going to have its hands full with Bijan Robinson. On a night the Falcons need a road win to keep the NFC South from slipping away, the matchup could not have broken better.

The Saints' defense is missing its spine

Elliss is the every-down linebacker who sets the edge against the run, and he's out. Granderson and Jennings are the two edge rushers Atlanta would have had to account for off the edge, and both are out, too. That's a defense asking Chase Young and Cameron Jordan to carry the pass rush and a reshuffled second level to contain Bijan. Pete Werner is questionable with a stinger, and Noah Fant is questionable on offense. The Falcons' injury report, by contrast, lists nobody ruled out — just a few questionable names in the front seven.

Bijan is the league's hottest back

This is the perfect week for the Falcons to lean on the run. Bijan Robinson is coming off NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after 213 scrimmage yards at Lambeau, and he leads the entire league with 467 scrimmage yards through three weeks. Against a Saints front missing its best run defender and both of its starting-caliber edge players, the math is simple: feed Bijan, keep Michael Penix Jr. on schedule, and don't let the Superdome crowd back into it.

Penix gets the road test

Michael Penix Jr. earned the start with a 35-14 rout of the Packers, and now he faces the other half of the test — a loud division road game on Monday night. The good news is he won't have to be Superman. With the Saints' pass rush gutted and Bijan rolling, Penix can play the efficient game: get the ball out quick, hit the layups, and let the run game carry the night. The Falcons don't need him to win this one alone. They need him to not lose it.

The NFC South math

Both teams are desperate. The Falcons are 1-2 and can't afford to fall to 1-3 with the division race already tight. The Saints are 2-1 and trying to protect their lead. A road win at the Superdome would be the first real statement of the Penix era — and with New Orleans this short-handed, there may not be a better chance all season.

Bird Gang bottom line

The Falcons were handed a gift: New Orleans' three best defenders are out, and Bijan Robinson is the hottest back in football. This is the kind of Monday night the season turns on. Feed Bijan, keep it simple for Penix, and take the road win.
