Falcons 17, Dolphins 12: Tua's last live tape, then the 53-man clock
Atlanta beat Miami 17-12 in the preseason finale — Tua went 7-of-8 for 95 yards with a fumbled snap, Brian Robinson scored, and Sunday's 6 p.m. ET cutdown is now the only game left.
The Falcons closed preseason 17-12 at Hard Rock Stadium. Starters played the first quarter, built a 7-3 lead, then handed the rest to the bubble. Tua Tagovailoa was 7-of-8 for 95 yards against the building that cut him. Michael Penix Jr. never took a snap. Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, the roster has to be 53.
Kevin Stefanski still has not named a Week 1 quarterback. Friday did not force him to.
What Tua actually put on tape
Boos on the first series. Then a surgical drive that ended with Brian Robinson Jr. punching it in from three yards. Kyle Pitts caught all three targets for 59 yards, including a 37-yard screen Drake London sprung on the sideline. Jahan Dotson had three catches for 27. The ball came out fast and short. No deep shots.
The next two first-team series ended in fumbles — Tua losing the snap, then Robinson putting it on the ground. Miami recovered both. Stefanski's medical data speech before the game was about soft-tissue load, not ball security. The tape is both.
Official takeaway from Will McFadden and Tori McElhaney: efficient, clinical, everything the league already knows Tua to be, minus the flash. Was it enough to start Sept. 13 in Pittsburgh? The staff did not answer that on the field.
The 53 is the real scoreboard
Cooper Rush's second-quarter drive was the evaluation tape. Eight-of-nine for 52 yards, Chris Blair converting fourth-and-3 and an 11-yard fingertips grab, Jack Velling the 3-yard touchdown. 14-3. Nick Folk later made it 17-6. That is how you keep a veteran and squeeze a receiver onto the back end.
DeMarcco Hellams was the defensive standout on the same Miami field that ended his 2024 season. Consecutive pass breakups, a near-pick, physical at the catch point. Jessie Bates III has been limited with a lower back issue; Hellams has been the other safety next to Xavier Watts. Secondary coach Justin Hood already said this is the best Hellams has looked. Friday backed it up.
Bralen Trice played all four quarters — first game action since his rookie preseason, also at Hard Rock. Cameron Thomas had a sack. Divine Deablo wore the green dot for the first time in a game. Chris Williams blocked a field goal. The Falcoholic's Dave Choate called the night sloppy and still plenty of information at running back, inside linebacker, and corner.
What did not get decided
Penix sat on purpose after three 11-on-11 practices. He said Friday would feel "too soon." Stefanski said he has a plan, wants to see how the game looks, and will not pre-commit. That sentence survived the final. Pittsburgh is Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. ET on FOX. The next time these pads matter is Acrisure.
Bijan Robinson did not need a preseason finale to prove anything. Robinson Jr. got the short-yardage score and the fumble. Tyler Goodson stayed in the mix as the third back. The cut list is interior D-line, nickel, linebacker rotation, returner — not the backfield headliners.
Bird Gang bottom line
Tua was clean through the air and messy with the football. Penix is medically cleared and still untested in 2026 live reps. Sunday's 53 is the only deadline that actually hits this weekend. If you are opening a league at pickembaby.com, leave the Falcons card in pencil until somebody takes the first snap in Pittsburgh — Friday was for the bubble, not the banner.
