Falcons 23-30 Ravens in OT: Penix's ribs end the .500 bid one drive too late

Michael Penix Jr. left with a rib injury at the end of regulation, Tua Tagovailoa threw a game-ending interception in overtime, and the Falcons dropped to 2-3 in a 30-23 Sunday night loss.

You could see the whole season pivot on one sideline in overtime. Michael Penix Jr. had spent the final moments of regulation on the turf in the Benz, took a hit to his ribs, stayed down while trainers worked on him, and by the time the Ravens marched 63 yards in seven minutes and Tyler Huntley dove in from the 1, he was done. Tua Tagovailoa came out for the first time as a Falcon, threw an interception two plays into the last drive, and the Ravens walked out of Atlanta with a 30-23 overtime win. The Falcons are 2-3, and a .500 season suddenly feels a long way from the 0-2 mess that started this.

Penix played the game of his career right up until he couldn't

Before the rib hit, the third-year quarterback was doing the sort of damage that had the Falcons on the verge of a third straight prime-time win. He opened ice-cold, going three-and-out twice, then caught fire on a third-and-3 from the 29 — layering a 25-yard dart to Drake London, then going 5-of-5 the rest of the drive, including a 36-yard laser to Jahan Dotson, and finishing it with a dagger to Kyle Pitts for Pitts' first touchdown of 2026. Waiting on third down all night, the Falcons racked up seven plays of 10-plus yards through the air, three of them 19-plus. That's trust in the arm you handed the franchise.

Then the hit. Penix said afterward he knew in his gut he couldn't give the team what it needed in overtime, tried to run and throw it off, and watched the pain win. "I hated it," he said. "I hated that I couldn't get back in that game." The Falcons will run more imaging Monday, but he believes he'll be ready to go vs. the Bears — "I've sat out enough in my career." For the record, the guy's teammates were already praying.

Bates and the defense did everything but finish it

Jessie Bates III was the reason this was even a one-score game late. He picked up a fumble and turned it into a 36-yard scoop-and-score for his first career touchdown, then knocked away Mark Andrews on a two-point conversion to preserve a 17-15 lead. He's now the only defensive player in the league with a defensive touchdown in each of the last four seasons — first since Aqib Talib (2014-17) — and his stretch ties DeAngelo Hall for the longest in Falcons history. That streak survived the night even if the lead didn't.

The other quiet headline: Jake Matthews, questionable all week with a groin, ran out for his 200th consecutive start. Derrick Henry did Derrick Henry things, which is exactly why the Ravens won — a long, grinding OT drive built on his carries was the difference, because with Lamar Jackson in a boot and Huntley at the wheel, Baltimore's whole identity was the ground game.

Why this one stings more than a blown lead

This wasn't the offense going quiet against a great defense. It was a fractured ending to the best stuff Penix has shown since the Packers rout — seven chunk plays through the air, a franchise QB finding his receivers, a defense forcing turnovers and dueling Henry. The Ravens got the ball first in OT, and they took it. That's the margin. After starting 0-2, the Falcons had won at Lambeau and in the Superdome with offense of historical standing; the streak came up a play short of the hat trick at home.

What's left of the season

They're 2-3 with the whole NFC South right there, and the schedule turns soft: the Bears come to the Benz on Sunday, the 49ers the week after. But the only number that matters this week is Penix's ribs. If he's back and Bijan Robinson keeps being the best back in football, this loss is a painful blip. If the QB who just turned the season around is hurt, the 0-2 nightmare has a way of coming back.

Bird Gang bottom line

The Falcons didn't lose because of Bijan or Bates or even the 0-2 hole — they lost because their quarterback's ribs gave out in the first overtime of his career. Cry about the call, then lock in on the Bears: when the pick'em board opens for Week 6 on pickembaby.com, a healthy Penix and a home game is the kind of spot your leaderboard should be built around.
