Five rushing touchdowns: Falcons run all over New Orleans, push win streak to two
The Falcons tied a franchise record with five rushing touchdowns on Monday night in the Superdome, rolling past New Orleans to get to 2-2 and keep the Michael Penix Jr. turnaround rolling.
Michael Penix Jr. took the Falcons to a second straight road rout, and this time the ground game made the statement. Atlanta put up five rushing touchdowns in Monday night's win at the Superdome — tying a single-game franchise record — to climb out of an 0-2 hole and get to .500. The offense that managed 262 yards a game in the first two weeks has flipped a switch, and it's carrying the season with it.
Here's what the 45-point night meant, who did the damage, and why Baltimore on Sunday night is suddenly appointment viewing.
A tie that took decades to catch
Five rushing touchdowns in one game hadn't happened for the Falcons since way back in the 1970s era, and Monday night's ground attack matched it punch for punch. Bijan Robinson did the bulk of the damage, with Brian Robinson hammering in scores of his own in a two-back backfield that has turned into the league's most dangerous running game. The Falcons leaned on the B-Rob backfield all night, and New Orleans never had an answer for it.
That output on the ground ties a franchise record for most rushing scores in a game — a stat line that reads like vintage Atlanta-power football instead of the finesse identity this team had been drifting toward.
Penix is 2-for-2 in the new era
The numbers since Penix took over are absurd. In the two games since he re-entered the lineup, Atlanta is averaging 40 points and 459 yards per game with just one turnover. That's a total identity shift from an offense that started 0-2 with seven giveaways and a boo-happy crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Monday night was more of the same — touchdowns on five of the Falcons' final six non-kneel possessions, with Jahan Dotson getting loose through the air as the Falcons moved the ball at will. The Falcons have now won consecutive games by 20+ points for the first time since Weeks 14-15 in 2016, the season they rode to Super Bowl LI. And since this is a road club, this is also the first time in franchise history they've won consecutive road games by 20+.
The defense is buying time early (again)
The Falcons don't lead the NFL in pass-rush win rate by accident. Ulbrich's front got home repeatedly in the Superdome, with Samson Ebukam returning from a hamstring injury to post sacks and rookie Harold Perkins Jr. flashing the edge juice Atlanta drafted him for. When Atlanta can build these leads, the pass rush gets to pin its ears back — and that's the exact recipe that makes this 2-2 record feel different from the 0-2 mess.
The cornerback corps is still thin without A.J. Terrell, and it'll keep being tested. But so far the unit is forcing the early into takeaways and chaos, which has been the difference in both wins.
The schedule is about to get real
Two wins over the Packers and Saints is one thing. Baltimore rolling into Atlanta for Sunday Night Football on Oct. 11 is another — the Ravens are the first real A-list test for this resurgent version of the Falcons. It's a 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff under the lights at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and it'll tell us whether the 20-point blowouts are a hot streak or a turning point.
The NFC South is still wide open, and the Falcons have grabbed a share of the conversation again.
Bird Gang bottom line
Two weeks ago this franchise was dead and booed at home. Now Michael Penix Jr. is running a 40-point machine and the ground game is making history. Baltimore on Sunday night is the real measuring stick — if they take that one, we're officially talking about a playoff team.
