Tua vs. Miami, 53 on Sunday: what Friday at Hard Rock actually decides
Tua Tagovailoa starts against his old club at 7 p.m. ET, Michael Penix Jr. stays on the sideline, and Kevin Stefanski's starters get their last live snaps before 6 p.m. Sunday cuts.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium. Tua Tagovailoa starts against the team that cut him. Michael Penix Jr. will not play. Kevin Stefanski said starters will play and that snap counts will vary by person — which is coach for: get what you need, then get the bubble guys on tape before Sunday.
FOX 5 in Atlanta (Justin Kutcher, Coy Wire, D.J. Shockley, Jen Hale). 92.9 The Game with Wes Durham and Dave Archer. Falcons Stream in-market, NFL+ or ESPN out of market. Cutdown is 6 p.m. ET Sunday, Aug. 30. That is the whole weekend.
What Tua is actually playing for
Stefanski still has not named a Week 1 quarterback. Penix has three 11-on-11 practices after last year's knee and told the staff Friday would feel "too soon." Tua gets the only remaining live snaps before Pittsburgh.
Playtime is not a coronation. Stefanski said Wednesday he has a plan, wants to see how the game looks, and will not pre-commit to a snap count. Cooper Rush is next. Jack Strand closes. If Tua is clean against a defense that knows his tells, the "OR" on the unofficial depth chart tilts. If he is not, the staff still has two weeks of practice and a medically cleared Penix who has not taken a preseason snap.
This is also a reunion, not a grudge script. The Dolphins released him. Atlanta signed him. Friday is the last chance for the first-team offense to run a real game-plan week — cards, scout looks, the Wednesday-to-Sunday rhythm Stefanski installed on purpose.
The 53 is the game inside the game
Interior D-line, nickel, linebacker rotation, returner. Those rooms do not care who starts Sept. 13.
Tyler Goodson has been the loudest camp story that is not a quarterback — North Gwinnett kid, 87 yards on 13 preseason carries through two games, a 49-yard score against Indianapolis, then jogging to special teams to stay on kickoff. Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr. are not fighting him for touches. He is fighting for the third back and a core-four job.
Jessie Bates III has been limited. DeMarcco Hellams has taken the first-team safety snaps next to Xavier Watts, and secondary coach Justin Hood said this is the best Hellams has looked. Avieon Terrell ramped into nickel with the 1s. Bralen Trice is out of the non-contact jersey. Kyle Hinton has not practiced this week after leaving the Colts game. Da'Shawn Hand has not been in pads for weeks. Those names are Sunday's spreadsheet.
Bijan's offense is the other tape, if they let him play
Tommy Rees and Bill Callahan have been stacking gap and power onto the outside-zone diet. Robinson said the point is getting him to the second level fast, plus "a couple new screens" that can go across the formation. He led running backs with 20 screen catches last season and ranked first in yards after catch on those plays (196).
Stefanski will not run the full menu in a preseason finale. If Bijan dresses and gets a series, watch whether the first call is zone or downhill. That is the Stefanski/Rees tell more than any completion percentage from Tua.
Bird Gang bottom line
Friday is not Week 1. It is Tua's last live look against the building that knows him, a 53-man cattle call, and a dress rehearsal for how this staff actually scripts a week. Penix stays home on purpose. Pittsburgh is Sept. 13.
