Hawks trade Zaccharie Risacher for Lu Dort: a win-now defensive pivot

The Hawks did not trade Zaccharie Risacher because they were tired of him. They traded him because the roster math stopped working — and Lu Dort was sitting on the other side of the equation.

The deal

In a three-team trade completed July 20, Atlanta acquired:

• Lu Dort (G/F) from Oklahoma City
• Ryan Nembhard (G) from Dallas

Atlanta sent:

• Zaccharie Risacher and a protected second-round pick to Dallas
• Two future second-round picks to Oklahoma City

Dallas also sent a second-round pick to OKC. The Thunder shed salary to get below the second apron; the Mavericks added a third No. 1 overall pick to a roster that already includes Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg; the Hawks got a defender who has started 423 of 432 career regular-season games.

Why Dort changes the identity

Dort is a 2024-25 All-Defensive First Team selection. He averaged 11.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists last season across seven years in Oklahoma City, including all 23 playoff starts on the Thunder's 2024-25 championship team.

Pair him with Dyson Daniels — another All-Defensive caliber wing — and Atlanta suddenly has a backcourt that can switch everything without apologizing for the offensive spacing.

That is the bet: process and defense over waiting on a 21-year-old former Rookie of the Year runner-up to crack a crowded wing rotation. Risacher had fallen out of the lineup after the Hawks added veterans at February's deadline, then brought in Aaron Wiggins and Devin Carter this summer. The 2027-28 fourth-year option ($17.4 million) was due by Oct. 31. Atlanta chose optionality instead.

Nembhard and the roster crunch

Ryan Nembhard arrives after a strong rookie year in Dallas — 6.6 points and 5.3 assists in 60 games, including a 23-assist night against Chicago that tied for the fourth-most by a rookie in NBA history. He is on an expiring deal, same as Dort.

The Hawks still have roster math to solve: 17 players on standard contracts, 14 or 15 slots available. Jalen Wilson signed to a two-way deal July 20, adding another body to the competition. Onsi Saleh's front office has been active — McCollum extended, Jock Landale signed, Wiggins and Carter acquired — but the Dort trade is the line in the sand.

This is not a rebuild move. This is a team that made the 2026 playoffs trying to get past the first round.

Bird Gang bottom line

Trading a No. 1 pick is never comfortable. Pairing two All-Defensive wings is the kind of defensive identity bet that pays off in close games — exactly the games that decide your pick'em record in March. The Hawks chose receipts over patience. Now they have to earn them on the floor.
