Falcons sign Cooper Rush as training camp opens with a thin QB room
Atlanta added veteran QB Cooper Rush on Day 1 of camp after releasing Trevor Siemian — with Tua Tagovailoa sidelined and Michael Penix Jr. still not cleared for team drills.
You can't script training camp. You can only react when the quarterback room empties out on Wednesday morning.
The move: Rush in, Siemian out
The Falcons made a flurry of roster moves as camp officially began in Flowery Branch:
- Signed veteran quarterback Cooper Rush
- Released Trevor Siemian with a non-football injury designation
- Placed on PUP: OT Jawaan Taylor, DB Billy Bowman Jr., OLB DeAngelo Malone, ILB Troy Andersen
- Placed on NFI: DL Zach Harrison, rookie DL Anterio Thompson
Siemian had signed in March as experienced depth behind Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. His release, combined with the injuries above, left undrafted rookie Jack Strand as the only quarterback fully cleared for practice on Day 1 — until Rush arrived.
Rush, 32, spent eight seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and appeared in four games for Baltimore last year. He is not a long-term answer. He is a professional who knows how to run a camp practice when the starters cannot.
Why Atlanta needed him today
Kevin Stefanski said Tagovailoa is dealing with a back "flare-up" and will not practice Wednesday. Sources told ESPN the injury is not considered serious and Tagovailoa could return next week — Stefanski said "sooner rather than later."
Penix is a different timeline. Still working back from November ACL surgery, he participated in individual drills and 7-on-7 work this spring but has not been cleared for 11-on-11 team sessions. Stefanski said Wednesday he is not sure when that clearance comes; the medical staff will decide.
That left Strand — out of Division II Minnesota State Moorhead — holding the only healthy clipboard on the field. Stefanski joked that Matt Ryan will not be taking reps under center. Funny, but the point stands: this is the NFL, and depth charts change in a morning.
What the PUP and NFI lists tell you
The pass rush was already the roster's biggest question. Starting camp without Malone, Harrison, and Thompson on the field does not help.
Taylor's absence on the offensive line matters for protecting whoever is playing quarterback this week. Andersen and Bowman — the latter recovering from a ruptured Achilles — are depth pieces the defense hoped to evaluate early.
PUP players can attend meetings and walk through but not practice. They can be activated anytime once cleared. Harrison and Thompson on NFI means injuries or illnesses outside football; same mechanics, same wait.
None of this is catastrophic on July 29. All of it is information.
Bird Gang bottom line
Cooper Rush is a band-aid, not a storyline — unless you are tracking which quarterback is actually taking first-team reps Friday when the public gets its first look at camp. The Bird Gang's edge in September starts with knowing who was healthy in July. Right now, that list is short.
