Penix and Tua split the 1s: Falcons finally have a real quarterback week

Michael Penix Jr. took first-team 11-on-11 snaps Monday and went 3-for-4 with the 1s — Kevin Stefanski still has not named a starter, and Friday in Miami is the last live look.

Michael Penix Jr. is not a rumor anymore. Monday in Flowery Branch he took 11-on-11 snaps for the first time since last year’s knee injury and split first-team work with Tua Tagovailoa.

That is the step the Colts recap was waiting on. Clearance Saturday. Actual football Monday. Kevin Stefanski still will not name a Week 1 quarterback. He also will not pretend this is still a 7-on-7 rehab.

What Monday actually looked like

Official camp report from Tori McElhaney: Penix and Tua rotated with the 1s through the team periods. Tua opened the first period with five plays (almost all Bijan Robinson handoffs). Penix came in with the 2s, scrambled out of pressure, then hit Drake London over the middle once the starting line rotated in.

Second team period was even — six plays each with the 1s. Tua: one attempt (incomplete to London), two scrambles, three handoffs. Penix: 3-for-4, Kyle Pitts over the middle, another checkdown to Pitts, a miss deep to Jahan Dotson, then the clip the team posted. He layered one over A.J. Terrell and put it on London in stride.

Stefanski called 11-on-11 “the closest approximation to football” and “a big step for Mike.” He also said the only thing that matters today is how Penix feels after Day 1. Fair. One practice is not a depth chart.

Friday in Miami is the last live look

Starters sit no more. Stefanski said they will play Friday night against the Dolphins. He is running this week like a regular-season Wednesday-Thursday-Friday so the building learns the meeting and install rhythm before Pittsburgh.

Penix on that plane is still TBD. Stefanski said the staff will have a concrete plan later in the week. If Penix’s knee answers the next two practices, Atlanta finally gets a live rush on the quarterback who has been in every meeting and almost none of the collisions.

Cutdown is Sunday, Aug. 30. That is a different argument — Tyler Goodson taking first kick-return reps next to Brian Robinson Jr., Kendal Daniels and Harold Perkins Jr. splitting ILB next to Divine Deablo, Corey Levin sneaking starting center snaps before Ryan Neuzil returned for the walkthrough. The QB room is the headline. The 53 is the subplot that actually fires people.

Who was not in the team periods

Kyle Hinton (left the Colts game) and Da’Shawn Hand did not practice. Jessie Bates III still sat team periods; DeMarcco Hellams ran with Xavier Watts. Za’Darius Smith had a helmet for individuals and zero team reps. Bralen Trice was back in a yellow non-contact jersey. Avieon Terrell returned but stayed out of team work.

None of that changes Friday. It does tell you the first 53 is still being built around absences.

Bird Gang bottom line

Tua has the camp tape. Penix has one 11-on-11 day and a throw over Terrell that made the building loud. Stefanski is staying “in the moment,” which is coach for we are not naming this until we have to. Friday in Miami is the last chance to see either of them under a rush that counts.
