Michael Penix Jr. named starter: Falcons hand him Lambeau Thursday, 0-2 and desperate
The Falcons are handing Michael Penix Jr. his first start of the season Thursday night in Green Bay after a 34-3 home-opener meltdown left the franchise 0-2 and boo-happy.
There it is. Michael Penix Jr. is the guy. The Falcons officially named Penix their starting quarterback for Thursday night's prime-time trip to Lambeau Field, pulling the plug on the Cooper Rush experiment after a 34-3 home-opener embarrassment against Carolina dropped Atlanta to 0-2. It's the answer the fan base has been screaming for since September — and now Penix, a year removed from repairing a torn ACL, finally gets his shot.
The Meltdown in the Benz
Before we start dreaming on Penix, let's recap how we got here. Carolina rolled into Mercedes-Benz Stadium and left with its fourth straight win in this rivalry, and it wasn't close. Bryce Young threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns — two of them to a suddenly resurgent Darren Waller — and Devin Lloyd returned one of his two interceptions 16 yards for a touchdown. All of that from the same Carolina defense that set franchise records for points allowed a week earlier in a 59-37 collapse against the Bears. Some turnaround.
An Offense That Couldn't Get Out of Its Own Way
Cooper Rush got the start. He went 10-for-17 for just 86 yards with two interceptions, fumbled on the very first play of the game, and got yanked in the third quarter for undrafted rookie Jack Strand — who promptly threw a pick-six and lost the handle on his final possession, all to a soundtrack of boos. The only points Atlanta managed all day were Nick Folk's 41-yard field goal. Even Bijan Robinson, the one-man show who dragged this offense to 173 all-purpose yards in Pittsburgh, could only scrape together 72 rushing yards as Carolina stacked the box and dared the pass game to beat them. It couldn't. Atlanta is now the only offense in the league without a single red-zone appearance through two weeks.
Why Penix, and Why Now
This isn't a panic move — it's the plan everyone expected, just delayed by a knee. Penix tore his ACL in early November and had surgery, missing the final seven games of last season. He was cleared for full 11-on-11 work just before the preseason finale, and he's spent the past month telling anyone who'd listen he was "really close." That included a Sept. 7 sit-down with Kevin Stefanski, where Penix said he didn't want to come back until he was fully himself. Now he says he's there. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees has been beating the drum for weeks: "I think Mike's looked good. He's been really going here for a few weeks now. He looks sharp, moving well." That's enough for Stefanski. Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) slides behind him as he works back to full-go, Rush falls to third, and UDFA Jack Strand rides shotgun.
Now What at Lambeau
This is no soft landing. The Packers sit at 1-1 at home at Lambeau Field on Thursday Night Football, and they opened as roughly a touchdown favorite over an 0-2 team switching quarterbacks on a short week. An early Thursday kickoff in Wisconsin with Jordan Love on the other sideline is about the least forgiving spot imaginable for a guy shaking off a year of rust. But Penix brings Atlanta's offense something it hasn't had through two games: a willingness to push the ball downfield, and a pulse. With Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan around him, the floor is something. The ceiling is whatever his knee allows.
Bird Gang bottom line
Getting Penix out there is the right call — there was nothing left to gain from Rush, and another Thursday of the same would've emptied the Benz for real. This is about finding out whether Penix is the answer, a year late, four days before the next deadline.
