Falcons trade Clark Phillips and a fifth for Gervon Dexter
Atlanta sent CB Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth-rounder to Chicago for DT Gervon Dexter — interior pass rush on cutdown Sunday after Walker and Pearce went down.
Cutdown Sunday just got a real football move. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Falcons sent corner Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Bears for defensive tackle Gervon Dexter. Ian Rapoport had the same terms.
The 53 is due at 6 p.m. ET. Atlanta did not wait for the waiver wire to paper over a pass rush that lost Jalon Walker for the year and James Pearce Jr. for eight games.
What Atlanta actually got
Dexter is 6-foot-6, 326 pounds, a 2023 second-rounder who has played 49 of a possible 51 games. Last season he started all 17, finished with 44 tackles, 11 quarterback hits, and a career-high six sacks. Career total: 13.5 sacks. The Falcoholic's Dave Choate called him a young interior rusher at a day-three price.
The knock follows him from Chicago: inconsistent run defense and tackling. That is why Ryan Poles was willing to move a 24-year-old starter in the last year of his rookie deal. The Falcons are not paying him like a building-block yet. They are renting a year of interior pressure and deciding later.
Ian Cunningham was in the Bears building when Chicago drafted him. This is a GM buying a player he already evaluated, not a random cutdown flyer.
Why this room needed a body today
Walker's torn ACL ended the leap year. Pearce's eight-game personal-conduct suspension takes effect Sunday — the same day the roster has to hit 53 — with reinstatement not until the Madrid week against Cincinnati. Za'Darius Smith was already the veteran patch. Dexter is the other kind of help: a 17-game starter who can collapse the pocket from inside while Brandon Dorlus, LaCale London, Maason Smith, and Chris Williams rotate.
Nate Ollie's line set a franchise sack record in 2025. The two young edges who were supposed to keep that engine running are one IR and one unpaid vacation. A 326-pound interior rusher does not replace Walker. He does give Ollie a different problem for opposing guards.
Phillips was not a lock for this 53. Trading a bubble corner and a fifth for a starter-caliber tackle on cut day is how you spend a roster spot that was already in play.
The rest of the 53 is still due at 6
The Falcoholic's first-wave tracker already had the usual camp casualties: Keelan Marion, Josh Simon, Brandon Walton, Andrew Stueber, Jaeden Roberts, Devonnsha Maxwell, Eric Johnson II, Daveren Rayner, Channing Tindall, Keidron Smith, plus Darren Hall to injured reserve. No shock names. The interesting ones — Tyler Goodson, Jack Strand, the nickel, the fifth linebacker — were still hanging when Dexter landed.
Week 1 is still Sept. 13 at Pittsburgh, 1 p.m. ET on FOX. Kevin Stefanski has not named a quarterback. This trade does not touch that. It does tell you the front office is not treating the Walker/Pearce holes as a slogan.
Bird Gang bottom line
Cunningham just spent a fifth and a corner who might not have made the team on a 24-year-old tackle with six sacks on the tape and a contract that expires in February. Fair price. Real need. The 53 still has to be filed by 6. If you are opening a league at pickembaby.com, the Falcons card is still in pencil until somebody takes the first snap in Pittsburgh — but the interior of that defense just got louder on purpose.
