Braves 5-3 Phillies: Riley's eighth-inning bomb off Duran flips Game 1

Austin Riley's three-run homer off Jhoan Duran with two outs in the eighth turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 Game 1 win, and the Braves are one victory from the NLDS.

For six months, Austin Riley's season was the quiet disappointment nobody wanted to talk about. Then he hit a 99.9 mph fastball over the right-center fence with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Braves' October flipped from "here we go again" to a 5-3 Game 1 win over the Phillies at Truist Park.

Chris Sale did his part — nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings — but the night belonged to the third baseman who spent the regular season hitting .219. Riley's three-run homer off All-Star closer Jhoan Duran gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Wild Card Series, and Raisel Iglesias closed it out.

The swing that changed everything

Riley's homer was the hardest pitch he's ever taken deep — a 99.9 mph four-seamer, middle-in, that he sent 385 feet with a 104.6 mph exit velocity. It would've left 27 of 30 ballparks. He didn't even know it was gone.

"I was just praying as I was running to first," Riley said.

It's the third go-ahead homer of his postseason career in the eighth inning or later, tied with Troy Glaus, Bernie Williams, Jose Altuve and Freddie Freeman for the most in MLB history. For a guy who hit 19 homers with a .654 OPS in the regular season, it was the clean-slate moment manager Walt Weiss promised.

Sale did his job, then the bullpen wobbled

Sale was vintage October Chris Sale — nine strikeouts, 6 1/3 innings, and he escaped a fifth-inning jam with a strikeout of J.T. Realmuto. But two of the three runs he allowed came after he left, when reliever Didier Fuentes surrendered Realmuto's go-ahead two-run triple with two outs in the seventh.

That's the one blemish on an otherwise clean night. The Phillies had been the team that kept beating Atlanta in October — six of the previous eight postseason meetings this decade, including the 2022 and '23 NLDS — and for a moment it looked like the same script. Then Riley rewrote it.

One win from the NLDS

History is on Atlanta's side now. Teams that take a 1-0 lead in a best-of-three Wild Card Series have won it 21 of 24 times, and home teams have swept all nine series in which they've gone up 1-0. One more win at Truist and the Braves are in the NLDS.

That chance comes today. Game 2 is Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET, with Cristopher Sanchez starting for Philadelphia against Tyler Mahle. A win sends Atlanta through without a Game 3; a loss forces everything onto Thursday.

Bird Gang bottom line

This is why you don't write off a two-time All-Star after one bad summer. Riley's regular season was a mess, and none of it mattered the second he got a clean slate in October. The Braves have the ace, the home crowd and now the lead — and the Phillies are the ones feeling the walls close in.
