Braves-Phillies, four games: Sale vs. Sánchez with a four-game lead
Atlanta is 83-57 and four up on Philadelphia heading into a 6:40 p.m. opener at Citizens Bank Park. Chris Sale (2.06 ERA) draws Cristopher Sánchez, and a sweep either way rewrites the NL East.
The Braves are 83-57, first in the NL East, four games up on the Phillies (79-61). Friday night at Citizens Bank Park is the start of four that can make that lead eight — or turn it into a tie by Monday afternoon.
Chris Sale vs. Cristopher Sánchez, 6:40 p.m. Atlanta is 5-1 against Philadelphia this year and 3-0 in this building, including an April sweep. The Phillies won the East the last two seasons and went 21-7 in August. This is the series Walt Weiss's club has been pointing at since the Nationals weekend ended.
How we got here: 9-0 in D.C., then the real games
Tuesday in Washington was a 9-5 mess (AJ Smith-Shawver, five earned in four). Wednesday was the cleanup: 9-0, combined two-hitter, Ronald Acuña Jr. making history.
Acuña's three-run shot in the seventh was his 200th career homer. Combined with 225 stolen bases, he joined the 200-200 club in his 904th game — fastest in MLB history, 25 games quicker than Alfonso Soriano. Sean Murphy had two hits and four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the sixth. Elieser Hernández threw three scoreless after Grant Holmes's start, which is the third time this year Hernández has been the adult in the room after a contract shuffle.
Acuña, after: "I love to play against Philly. This weekend, it's like playoff games." That is the correct temperature.
The pitching card
MLB.com's Theo DeRosa laid out the four days. Do not invent a fifth:
- Friday, 6:40: Sale (13-9, 2.06 ERA, 177 K in 144 IP) vs. Sánchez (16-4, 2.52 ERA). Nos. 2 and 3 in MLB.com's latest NL Cy Young poll.
- Saturday, 6:05: Martín Pérez (3.05 ERA in his first Atlanta season) vs. Zack Wheeler.
- Sunday, 1:10, NBC/Peacock: Tyler Mahle (1.48 ERA in five starts since the Giants trade) vs. Aaron Nola (2.65 ERA in six August starts).
- Monday, 1:05, Labor Day: Bryce Elder (8-8, 4.11) vs. Jesús Luzardo (NL Pitcher of the Month for August; 2.07 ERA over his last 20 starts).
Sale's last start was the Dodgers shutout: 11 K, no walks, a 99.6 mph heater to punch out Shohei Ohtani, first complete-game shutout since 2019. His four-seamer is the pitch now — .217 batting average against in 2026 after a .320 mark last year — which is a problem for a Phillies lineup that has been feasting on mistakes, not elite lefty heat.
López is the ghost on the taxi. Thursday at Gwinnett: five scoreless, six strikeouts, two walks, two hits, 93 pitches (53 strikes). Third rehab outing since the Aug. 2 IL stint. Atlanta wants him stretched as rotation insurance. ESPN still has a Sept. 7 estimated return. He is not in this four-game plan. He is the reason Weiss can keep treating Smith-Shawver as day-to-day.
What Philadelphia actually is
Don Mattingly's club is not the April group Atlanta swept. Rob Thomson was gone a week after that series. August was the best month in baseball. Bryce Harper has a 35-game on-base streak, the longest active in the majors, and a .903 OPS. Kyle Schwarber has 40 homers.
A Phillies sweep ties the East. A Braves sweep makes it eight and, as MLB.com put it, basically salts the division. The pressure is on the home team. That does not mean Atlanta gets to sleep through Sánchez, Wheeler, Nola, and Luzardo in a row.
Acuña is hitting .316 with an .830 OPS over his last 10 after a 15-game slog at .207/.292/.241. Michael Harris II and Matt Olson (37 homers, 80 RBIs) are the other two names that have to show up if this is actually October practice.
Bird Gang bottom line
Four-game lead, four games in the other guy's park, Sale on the mound tonight. Win the series and the East starts looking like a September formality. Split it and you still have work. Get swept and every Phillies highlight from 2022-23 is back on your timeline. This is the week.
