Braves 6-2 Phillies in Game 3: three homers, a 2-1 series, and the NLDS awaits the Dodgers
Michael Harris II, Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson all went yard, the offense carried a winner-take-all Game 3, and the Braves are back in the NLDS against the Dodgers for the first time since 2023.
The Braves didn't make it easy on themselves, but the scoreboard that matters says 2-1. Michael Harris II, Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson all homered Thursday at Truist, the offense turned a winner-take-all Game 3 into a 6-2 cruise, and Atlanta punched its ticket to the NLDS for the first time since 2023 — with the Dodgers waiting in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Three swings that ended the Phillies
This one was over in the early innings. Harris II got the scoring started, Albies turned on one against the Philadelphia bullpen to make it 5-0, and Olson added insurance as the bats refused to let the season ride on a one-run margin. A Braves pitcher worked as an opener and kept the Phillies from building any early momentum, which was all it took once the offense started rolling.
It was a fitting way to finish a series where the long ball decided everything. The Braves walked off Game 1 on Austin Riley's eighth-inning three-run homer off Jhoan Duran. Philadelphia answered in Game 2, forcing this Game 3 on three dramatic swings. In the finale, Atlanta got the last word — and the cleanest of the three.
Back in the NLDS, finally
The last time the Braves played in the Division Series, Ronald Acuña Jr. was still in his MVP tear of 2023. That postseason ended against these same Phillies, and the franchise has spent the two Octobers since watching. Now the bracket flips: Atlanta's reward for surviving the Wild Card is a best-of-five date with the 100-plus-win Dodgers who ran everyone down in the fall again last year.
The travel is ugly — the Wild Card wrapped at Truist on Thursday night, and Game 1 is Saturday afternoon at Dodger Stadium. No off-day comfort for a club that clearly wants as many swings at October as it can get.
The sensible concern
Clean as the box score reads, this was still one series where two of three games were decided late, and now the margin for error gets thinner. The bullpen has to travel a lot better than the offense's first-inning patience allows for; the starters have to give the back end a rest. That's October baseball, and it's the good kind of problem — the kind only a team still playing gets to have.
Bird Gang bottom line
Nobody in Atlanta saw a division title back in April, when Martín Pérez was getting designated and the rotation felt two arms short. Now the Braves are the last team standing in the NL East, and they've got the best player in baseball on the other side. Winning Game 3 was the hard part; Saturday starts the part where the guys who just homered themselves into October get to swing at the Dodgers. If the bats travel to LA, this series is anyone's.
